New Biochip Could Replace Animal Testing

US scientists have created two biochips that could replace the use of animals in toxicity tests for chemicals and drugs. The biochips mimic the reaction of the human body and reveal whether chemicals and pharmaceuticals are toxic to skin and organs.

According to an article in the current Scientific American magazine, biochips promise to deliver better drug and chemical testing, cutting costs and nixing the need for most animal testing.

State leaders want Arizona to become a state-of-the art biotech hub. If so, scientists at TGen and academic institutions should take note of this breakthrough technology that provides a low cost, accurate alternative to animal testing. As Arizona expands its biotech industry, this is the type of cutting-edge science that should be embraced.

  1. The science was just the first hurdle - the next hurdles are 1) convincing industries that these alternatives are both less expensive and scientifically valid, then once key industry players are with you convincing law makers that animal tests should not be required by law (in the cases this still applies).

Per politicians the case "for" Covance seems to be jobs and tax revenue. Covance will also lobby against the validity of alternative tests. Is Chandler City Council wooing the manufacturer of the alternative tests to move manufacturing to town? That would also be a natural in the Bio / Electronic corridor, would create jobs, and would not bring a Treblinka to town. Now they would have their jobs, their tax revenue, cutting-edge rather than outdated science, and congratulations rather than protests. Imagine.
